Kathryn Hahn’s kids are growing up fast! The actress and her husband, Ethan Sandler, are proud parents to two teenagers: son Leonard Henry, 16, and daughter Mae Marie, 16. Hahn and Sandler, who tied the knot in 2002, have been raising their family largely out of the spotlight — though Hahn has shared glimpses of motherhood over the years.
In 2021, Hahn opened up about parenting during an interview with actress Gaby Hoffman for The Cut. “I remember looking at the eighth graders and being like, ‘They will never be in eighth grade.’ Like, childhood lasts forever,” she said. “And I look at them now and I’m like, oh, that part is over for them. And so it’s such a weird, short amount of time… mishegoss.”
She added that she works on “softening her heart” around her kids so they don’t feel the weight of her working-parent anxieties. “I’m just trying to be a good listener… Being present and giving them space.” Hahn also reflected on how her kids used to travel with her everywhere when they were younger — something that’s shifted as they’ve gotten older.
Leonard Henry was born in October 2006, making Kathryn and Ethan first-time parents. Hahn has never been shy about sharing sweet and funny memories of his childhood.
During a 2018 appearance on GMA Day, she recalled a moment she jokingly called a “bad mom” slip-up. When Leonard lost his last baby tooth at almost 12 years old, she forgot to play tooth fairy. “He had to remind me,” she laughed. Feeling guilty, she left him $20 along with a note from the tooth fairy reading, ‘Happy last tooth. That was fun. Love, the tooth fairy.’ Hahn admitted she cried over the milestone: “It was the last tooth and it’s over. Ugh, I can’t stand how fast it goes.
Mae Marie was born on July 27, 2009, after two days of labor, arriving early despite a September due date. In 2016, Hahn shared a humorous parenting milestone — Mae’s first “proper” swear word.
“Oh my God. My daughter said her first proper swear word,” she told. “It was not a good one, but it was used correctly — as an adverb, with a big old ‘-ing’ at the end.” She joked, “At least it’s grammatically correct.”
That same year, Hahn revealed Mae had started reading to her. “We’re reading Charlotte’s Web for the umpteenth time,” she said, laughing that Mae would now call her out if she tried to skip any “boring” parts. Mae has also shown interest in her mom’s work, enjoying watching WandaVision with the whole family — something they rarely get to do together. She and Leonard are also fans of Hahn’s earlier movies like Anchorman and How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days.
Despite her Hollywood success in films like Bad Moms and Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery, Hahn keeps her personal life grounded and private. She’s been married to Ethan Sandler since 2002, and together they’ve built a cozy, down-to-earth home life with their kids — and a growing collection of pets.
“I live a pretty normal life,” Hahn told Parade. “I have cute kids and a hubby forever and two dogs and a rabbit and now a hamster. We’re turning into animal hoarders. I have this rich and creative life but also a normal life, and I’ve been able to keep the two separate and holy.”
Like Hahn, Sandler works in entertainment as an actor, writer, and producer. The couple were college sweethearts who broke into the industry together — and two decades later, they’re still partners in both life and love.
