Family Travel Guides

Family travel should feel like a change of scene, not an obstacle course with nicer weather. Start here for plain-English UK guides to flying with children, choosing a family destination, buying or hiring a car, toddler days out, travel safety and the small practical checks that prevent a long day becoming a very long day.

Pick the guide that answers the next decision rather than planning the whole trip at once: where to go, how to get there, what equipment is worth carrying, and how to keep the day flexible when naps, weather or appetites change.

Buying a family car

Use these two guides together without making them compete. First work out what the household can afford and whether the car fits people, seats and kit. Then learn how registration, catalogue terms, inspection, bidding, payment and collection work at a UK auction.

Make the day easier

Build the plan around the least flexible need. That may be a baby’s safe sleep space, a child’s medication, a reliable meal, an accessible transfer or enough quiet after a busy airport. Keep one change of clothes and the first evening’s essentials in hand luggage, confirm important requests in writing, and leave enough empty time to change course without feeling that the holiday has failed.

Before leaving each morning, check the current weather, beach flags, opening arrangements and route home. Give one adult responsibility for documents and medicine, but make sure another adult knows where they are. Carry water, one familiar snack and the smallest useful change of clothes. Most importantly, agree on the fallback before anybody is tired: a nearby café, hotel room, short walk or completely cancelled plan all count as successful family travel.
