There were family priorities that needed to be taken care of,” he told The Guardian in June 2006. “I used to be away 42 weeks a year. I wanted to see my kids grow up.”
After his much-publicized romance with fellow tennis great Chris Evert, the Wimbledon champion married former Playboy Playmate of the Year Patti Connors in 1978, per ESPN. They welcomed their first child, Brett, in 1979, followed by daughter Aubree in 1984. In 1996, Jimmy stepped away from the sport to spend more time raising his children at their family ranch in Santa Barbara, Calif.
While Brett carried on the tennis tradition behind the scenes as an Emmy-winning producer for the Tennis Channel, Aubree pursued her own path. She worked with the Los Angeles Lakers until 2018, per her Facebook, and later became a fitness instructor in Florida while also competing in ballroom dance.
Born on Aug. 2, 1979, Brett grew up immersed in tennis, learning the game from his grandmother, Gloria. Though he played at the junior level, he described himself as more of a “casual” player in a 2014 interview with Tennis Prose. At 13, he left tennis behind to focus on golf, which he played at the University of Arizona until a wrist injury sidelined him.
Still, Brett’s love for tennis never faded. Some of his fondest memories are of watching his father compete. “The crowd would part like the Red Sea as the two players made their way to the stadium, almost like heavyweight fighters preparing for battle,” he recalled. “The would cheer and pat their favorite player on the back, and I knew this fired my father up.
Jimmy and Patti’s daughter, Aubree, was born on Dec. 24, 1984. From 2015 to 2018, she worked for the Los Angeles Lakers and has since built a career as a fitness instructor and competitive ballroom dancer. After taking a break in 2023, she officially returned to competition in May 2025.
Like her brother, Aubree enjoys spending time with her dad on the court and the golf course. In June 2021, she shared photos from a visit, writing, “Had such a great time with him. Other than playing tennis with him, golfing is my next favorite thing! Whether it’s on the driving range, playing a round, or looking for gators in the ponds.
