Andy Samberg is a proud dad of two!
The Brooklyn Nine-Nine star and his wife, musician Joanna Newsom, are parents to two children. Though the couple has chosen to keep their family life largely out of the spotlight, Samberg’s rep confirmed in August 2017 that they had quietly welcomed a baby girl. Her name has not been publicly shared.
The couple, who tied the knot in September 2013, later welcomed a second child. However, they have kept all details—including the child’s name, birthdate, and gender—private.
During a July 8 appearance on Amy Poehler’s Good Hang podcast, Samberg opened up about how becoming parents has brought him and Newsom even closer.
“Obviously having a kid changes things, ’cause your responsibilities shift, your sleep schedule… but anytime there’s a pocket of time where it’s just us, it still feels like we’re getting away with something,” he shared. “Like we’re having a sleepover and it’s fun and there’s no one I would rather be hanging out with and chatting with. It’s amazing. I feel really lucky to get to share my life with her.”
From how he adjusted to fatherhood to how his kids make him laugh, here’s everything Andy Samberg has shared about being a dad.
Andy Samberg became a first-time dad in 2017. While he and his wife Joanna Newsom have kept their daughter’s name and birthday private, a rep confirmed to in August of that year that the couple had welcomed a baby girl.
Samberg, who was no stranger to late nights from his SNL days, joked that the show had prepped him well for parenthood. In a 2018 interview with The New York Times, he said the sleep deprivation felt familiar.
“The sleep deprivation part of it has been like, ‘Oh, right — this feeling,’” he shared. “But there’s so much less stress because the baby’s not going live at 11:30.”
Despite the challenges, Samberg called his first year as a dad “the best thing that’s ever happened” to him. “Just like a beautiful, incredible dream,” he said. “It has surpassed every expectation I ever had. It’s definitely been very blissful.
Even as a baby, Samberg’s daughter was already showing signs of her dad’s comedic influence. In a 2017 interview on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, he shared that she had begun making fart noises with her mouth and cracking herself up. “So I was like, ‘Oh, well, I’ve taught her everything I know,’” he joked.
By 2021, her sense of humor had evolved into full-on “bits,” much to Samberg’s delight. On The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, he recalled how she would pretend everything was “totally normal” when caught mid-mischief, adding, “She’s got all the lingo down.”
Still, not every joke landed. “There was a long time where she would talk a lot about how Mommy was funny, and Daddy is not funny,” he admitted. “But now she’s keying into my thing
Despite his busy career, Samberg tries to carve out time in the mornings with his daughter. He told in 2020 that she was keeping him physically on his toes.
“Every week I’m injuring my neck and back picking up my kid,” he joked. “I’ve reached the age where I should be stretching first thing in the morning… And on the days that I don’t do it? A lot of, ‘No, I can’t pick you up right now, sweetie.’”
He added that he and Newsom take turns with morning duties. “Some mornings you do it all together as a family,” he said, “but it’s been very nice knowing we can trade off and give each other rest when needed.”
While Joanna Newsom is the professional musician in the family, Samberg has his own bedtime routine. On The Late Show, he shared that he often sang “Moonshiner,” an old folk standard, to soothe his daughter as a baby—even though the Bob Dylan version isn’t exactly kid-friendly.
“It’s a really beautiful melody,” he explained, “and for some reason, I could do it in a way that was soothing to her and didn’t sound terrible.”
Following in her mom’s footsteps, Samberg’s daughter has shown an early interest in music. In a 2020 appearance on Conan, he revealed that harp maker Lyon & Healy gifted the couple a mini harp after her birth. “She sometimes gets on there and starts strumming it and emulating her mom. It’s pretty cute,” he said.
The toddler-sized harp even appeared in Samberg’s GQ photo shoot that same year, where he joked that her skills were “not bad” for a 3-year-old.
She’s also developing a love for cooking. Samberg told The New York Times that they were gifted a copy of Fanny at Chez Panisse, a children’s cookbook, and have enjoyed making recipes like corn muffins and parsley salad together.
“We’re helping her more than she realizes,” he said, “but we’re not about to tell her that. We just want her to feel inspired.”
In 2022, Samberg told that his daughter’s love for The Nutcracker was still going strong—three years in.
“I keep expecting it to tail off, but instead, it’s only growing,” he said, adding that he now knows the Tchaikovsky score by heart. “It’s been a really cool thing to see through her eyes, but also just to learn about as an adult.”
He first mentioned her Nutcracker fascination in 2020, telling Men’s Journal that it all started with a musical book she was gifted, which played snippets of the ballet’s music.
Even though he’s voiced characters in several animated films—including Hotel Transylvania and Storks—Samberg revealed in 2022 that he hadn’t yet introduced them to his daughter.
“She’s still a little too young, but I’m feeling really confident knowing I have four in the hopper,” he told USA Today. He added that he intentionally avoided watching popular animated hits like Encanto and Moana so he could experience them with her for the first time.
“I can’t wait,” he said. “I was talking to my wife the other day about how I can’t wait to watch E.T. with her. Stuff like that where we’re both like, ‘Oh, we’re going to cry!’”
Years after welcoming their daughter, the couple added another member to the family—though they’ve kept all details under wraps. The news came out in 2023 when Samberg’s Lonely Island bandmate Jorma Taccone revealed on The Tonight Show that Samberg had a second child.
Taccone mentioned that Samberg had to bow out of filming a cameo in Weird: The Al Yankovic Story due to the baby’s arrival.
Samberg has previously shared that the slower pace of life during the COVID-19 pandemic allowed for meaningful family time. Speaking to E! in 2021, he said, “A lot of these days are with my wife and daughter… dancing in the kitchen. It’s the one true silver lining of being homebound—so much wonderful family time.”
