Two sons, two mothers and two very different childhoods
John Lennon’s 2 Sons: Julian and Sean, Their Mothers and Lives Today

Quick answer: John Lennon had two sons: Julian Lennon, born 8 April 1963 to John and first wife Cynthia Lennon; and Sean Ono Lennon, born 9 October 1975 to John and second wife Yoko Ono. They are paternal half-brothers, both musicians and, by their own accounts, close friends as adults.
A two-name list misses the most important part of this family story. Julian and Sean were born twelve years apart, to different mothers, and experienced their father at radically different moments in his life. John was largely absent after separating from Cynthia; after Sean’s birth, he stepped away from recording for several years and took a much more present role at home.
The brothers should not be reduced to competing versions of their father. Julian has built work across music, photography, books and philanthropy. Sean is a musician, composer, producer and filmmaker whose recent work includes the Oscar-winning short WAR IS OVER!. Their close adult relationship is directly documented, not inferred from photographs.
John Lennon’s sons at a glance
| Son | Born | Age on 13 August 2026 | Mother | Current public work |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Julian Charles John Lennon | 8 April 1963 | 63 | Cynthia Lennon | Musician, photographer, author and philanthropist |
| Sean Taro Ono Lennon | 9 October 1975 | 50 | Yoko Ono | Musician, composer, producer and filmmaker |
Julian is John’s elder son from his first marriage. Sean is John’s younger son from his second marriage. “Half-brothers” describes their shared father; it does not mean half a relationship. Both have repeatedly described a close bond.
For another music family split across parent branches, compare Alicia Keys and Swizz Beatz’s blended family. John Legend’s four-child guide shows how a stage name can differ from the surname children use.
How the Lennon parent branches fit together
John married Cynthia Powell in August 1962. Julian was born the following April, as Beatlemania was accelerating. John and Cynthia divorced in 1968. John married Yoko Ono in March 1969, and Sean was born in New York in 1975 on John’s thirty-fifth birthday.
The boys did not grow up in one household. Julian was principally raised by Cynthia in Britain. Sean grew up with John and Yoko in New York until John was killed on 8 December 1980, when Sean was five and Julian was seventeen.

Julian Lennon: an adult career beyond one famous song
Julian was born on 8 April 1963. Paul McCartney began “Hey Jude” as “Hey Jules” while thinking about Julian during his parents’ separation. That connection is part of Beatles history, but it is not Julian’s entire biography.
His recording career began with Valotte in 1984 and brought a Grammy nomination for best new artist. His later work spans seven studio albums, fine-art photography, documentary production and children’s books. Through the White Feather Foundation, he has supported environmental, humanitarian and education projects.
A 2025 Guardian interview described his photography book Life’s Fragile Moments and his determination to establish creative work on its own terms. That current evidence is more useful than presenting him indefinitely as a young singer trying to sound like his father.
Sean Ono Lennon: music, production and film
Sean was born on 9 October 1975. He has released solo music and worked in groups including the Ghost of a Saber Tooth Tiger and the Claypool Lennon Delirium. He has also collaborated extensively with Yoko and worked on archival John Lennon projects.
In 2024, the Recording Academy documented two substantial current projects: Sean’s instrumental album Asterisms and WAR IS OVER! Inspired by the Music of John & Yoko. Sean co-wrote the short film’s original story; it won the Academy Award for best animated short film.
These are his own credits. Describing the family connection is accurate, but treating every project as an imitation of John erases the experimental bands, composition, production and film work Sean has developed across decades.
Why were their childhoods so different?
| Question | Julian | Sean |
|---|---|---|
| Home base | Raised principally by Cynthia in Britain | Raised by John and Yoko in New York |
| John’s career moment | The Beatles’ rise and touring years | John’s 1975–1980 recording break and return |
| Age when John died | 17 | 5 |
| Adult account | Has discussed absence, hurt and later forgiveness | Has recalled early studio and home memories |
Julian has written and spoken directly about the pain of his father’s absence. He has also said their relationship was improving before John died. Both statements belong together: later reconciliation does not erase childhood hurt, and childhood hurt does not require an outsider to diagnose every adult involved.
John’s years at home with Sean are well documented, as is his eventual return to recording for Double Fantasy. Calling him simply a “stay-at-home dad” without the dates would obscure how short that period was and how differently Julian experienced him.
Are Julian and Sean close today?
Yes, based on their own words. In a joint CBS interview, Sean said Julian inspired him to play music and described him as a hero. Julian explained that protecting his relationship with Sean helped him move beyond older family conflict.
In 2025 Julian called Sean his best friend and said they get on “like a house on fire”. They also appear in each other’s creative histories: Julian photographed Sean on tour, while Sean has spoken about Julian teaching him guitar.
This is stronger evidence than a reunion photograph. It establishes a relationship they have chosen to describe publicly, while leaving private contact and family disagreements outside the guide.
What do their names tell us?
| Public name | Full name | Useful context |
|---|---|---|
| Julian Lennon | Julian Charles John Lennon | Known by Julian; “Hey Jude” began as “Hey Jules”. |
| Sean Ono Lennon | Sean Taro Ono Lennon | Uses both parental surnames in his public name. |
| John Lennon | John Winston Ono Lennon | Added Ono to his legal name in 1969. |
The names help distinguish the two maternal branches, but they do not change the sibling relationship. Search labels such as “John Lennon kids” often hide that both sons are now established adults with public careers of their own.
