Conan O’Brien has a knack for finding humor in everything—including parenting. The former late-night host and his wife, Liza Powel O’Brien, are the proud parents of two children: daughter Neve, born in 2003, and son Beckett, born in 2005. Over the years, Conan has shared lighthearted stories and witty observations about raising kids, often poking fun at the rollercoaster of fatherhood on social media.
“My children think of me as their best friend—the one they dropped like a stone in high school,” he joked on X in 2022.
But behind the comedy is a deeply sentimental dad. Speaking in 2007, he reflected, “Anyone here with kids can tell you, suddenly everything you did before in your life, that you worried about before you had kids, seems pretty silly. Obviously it’s the best thing that ever happened to me, and it’s exciting.”
Despite his celebrity status, Conan has been intentional about keeping his children out of the limelight. In a 2014 interview with Absolute Radio, he explained, “I don’t take my children to premieres. I don’t want my kids living in a zero-gravity environment just because I happened to get lucky.” Still, when he accepted the prestigious Mark Twain Prize for American Humor in March 2025, Conan made sure to thank them—his quiet way of keeping family at the heart of it all.
Born on October 14, 2003, Neve is Conan and Liza’s first child. At the time, Conan was hosting Late Night with Conan O’Brien. In a 2014 interview with Success magazine, Conan credited his wife and kids for keeping him grounded: “My family, they are all funny and very real, and to this day they don’t care that I’m on television.” He added with a smile, “Kids kick your a– every day.”
One of his favorite stories about Neve came from a special event at the John F. Kennedy Library in 2012. Just as he was about to launch a new show, she gave him a pointed bit of feedback: “Could you try and keep this one longer than the last one?”—a hilarious jab at his short tenure on The Tonight Show. Conan recalled it with a laugh, calling it “a great, honest moment.
Beckett was born on November 9, 2005. From a young age, he showed a love for technology. “My son is like a little Steve Jobs,” Conan said in a radio interview when Beckett was just 8. When asked to dress as his hero for school, Beckett chose the Apple co-founder.
In 2018, Conan and Beckett attended the Bay Area Maker Faire together and even filmed a video to document the experience. “Beckett was so psyched about it,” Conan said, “I was blown away by the ball you were making levitate,” gesturing proudly to his son.
In a 2021 interview with Vulture, Conan reflected on how fatherhood changed his perspective. “When you get married and start having kids, and your kids are growing up and you have a good share of success, that drive [for more] gets blunted a bit. I am happier now than I was at any other period in my life.
Liza Powel O’Brien has been Conan’s partner in life since the early 2000s. The two met in 1999 while filming a segment for Late Night at her ad agency. “I immediately started talking to her,” Conan shared on The Michelle Obama Podcast, “and then I’m not even trying to be funny—I’m just trying to find out more about this woman.”
After a long hallway conversation that ended with them exchanging contact info, the couple began dating. They married in January 2002 in Liza’s hometown of Seattle and went on to build a life grounded in love, family, and humility—welcoming Neve and Beckett along the way.
Liza was by Conan’s side at the Kennedy Center in March 2025, when he received the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor—a milestone moment that, fittingly, became available for the world to stream on Netflix in May.
