Best Sex Positions To Get Pregnant

If you’re thinking of having a baby, you’re probably wondering which positions are the best sex positions to get pregnant. Every position has the potential to get you pregnant, but there are some that might be a little better for conception than others.

Sex Positions To Get Pregnant

There’s very little research into which positions are best for getting pregnant. Part of that is because there are many other factors that can affect your odds of conception, and it can be difficult to separate those out from the position that was used. However, experts can make an educated assessment on the best sex positions to get pregnant.

Missionary

The man on top missionary position is generally considered to be one of the best positions for getting pregnant. Experts believe that because the woman is lying on her back, the sperm can get through the cervix more efficiently.

This may work better for women who have uteruses that tilt forwards, which is about two thirds of all women. However, a third of women have uteruses that tilt backwards, so the missionary position may not be the best position for them. Also, unless there has been a medical reasoning, it’s unlikely that you would know which way your uterus tilts.

CAT (Coital Alignment Technique)

This position is similar to the missionary position. The man is on top, but instead of thrusting, both partners rock their pelvises in a rhythm. It’s one of the best positions for the woman to reach orgasm, which although not essential for conception, can potentially help.

Reverse Cowgirl

The reverse cowgirl position is where the woman is on top, but rather than facing her partner’s face, she faces his feet. It allows the woman to have more control over the depth of the penetration. This position can be more comfortable, and therefore more efficient for women who have backwards tilting uteruses.

Legs On Shoulders

This is another variation of the missionary position. The man is on top, and the woman puts her legs over his shoulders. If this isn’t comfortable, the man could hold the woman’s legs using his elbows instead. Holding the legs up creates more gravity for the sperm to get closer to the cervix easier.

Sideways Scissors

This position is perfect for a deep penetration, but it also encourages an intimacy and emotional connection. Both partners lie on their sides, facing each other while the man penetrates the woman. It can take you a little while to get comfortable in this position, but the depth and angle could make a short swimming distance for the sperm.

Doggy Style

Any position that can bring the sperm closer to the cervix could be better for getting pregnant. Doggy style, with the man entering from behind, is one of the best positions for deeper penetration, and giving the sperm a shorter travel distance.

It’s also a good way of using gravity to help the sperm along. If you can keep on your knees, but lower your upper body slightly, it means that the sperm are traveling downwards, rather than straight, or upwards.

Rear Entry

Rear entry shares some similarities with the doggy style position, in that they both have the man behind the woman. However, rather than being up on her hands and knees, the woman is lying on her stomach. It’s a little less stress on the woman’s body, but still gives a deep penetration, bringing the sperm close to the cervix.

Wheelbarrow

This is another position where the man is behind the woman, but this one needs a little more effort. The woman rests her arms on the bed, or the floor, and the man holds her legs out, a bit like she’s the wheelbarrow in an old fashioned wheelbarrow race.

Whatever Position Is Your Favourite

If your favourite position hasn’t made the list, add it. There’s some research that suggests that if both partners are highly aroused, then there could be a greater chance of pregnancy. This really means that whatever position turns you on is the one that is most likely to help you conceive.

Tips For Trying To Conceive

There’s a few other tips that may help you conceive:

Legs Up

Some people would tell you that you should lie with your legs up for 30 minutes after sex in order to conceive. Fortunately, this isn’t true, just uncomfortable, awkward, and it looks a bit weird. There’s no evidence that doing this helps you conceive at all. There is some suggestion that lying on your back for 15 minutes after sex might be helpful.

You could try lying on your back, relaxing with your partner for a while after sex. It can help deepen your bond, and intimacy, but you can keep your legs down.

How Often To Have Sex

You may have heard that you need to have sex every day when you’re trying to conceive. You don’t. You can, but you don’t have to. There’s no difference in conception rates if you’re having sex every day, or every other day. As long as you are having sex during the time you ovulate.

In terms of how often to have sex, consistency is important, but being obsessive about it is absolutely not.

Female Orgasm

There is some research that suggests that the female orgasm can help improve the chances of conception slightly. However, don’t worry if you don’t orgasm. It’s more likely that stressing about not orgasming will negatively impact the chances of conception to a greater degree than an orgasm would help them.

Don’t Make It A Chore

Try to keep sex as something fun for you and your partner to share. Don’t make it all about trying to conceive, and don’t make it a chore. There’s many factors that affect conception, but stress levels are definitely one of them. Keep things exciting by changing position, location, or whatever else makes you and your partner feel good.

Lubricant

The lubricant you use may affect the chances of conception. Firstly, read all packaging to make sure that the lube you use doesn’t actually contain spermicide. Also, be aware that water based lubes are common, but they can make it difficult for sperm to survive. Hydroxyethyl cellulose-based lubes are the most helpful when you’re trying to get pregnant.
