Will Smith’s life was dramatically transformed when he rose to fame in 1990 as the Fresh Prince of Bel-Air — a transformation that deepened when he became a father for the first time in 1992. The celebrated King Richard star is a father to three children: sons Trey, 31, and Jaden, 25, and daughter Willow, 23, all of whom have ventured into the entertainment industry. Smith welcomed his first son, Trey, with then-wife Sheree Zampino in 1992. Although their relationship became strained after his divorce from Zampino in 1995, Smith and his son have since mended their bond. In 1997, Smith married actress-singer Jada Pinkett Smith, and together they welcomed son Jaden in July 1998, followed by daughter Willow in October 2000. From reconciling with Trey to adapting his parenting style because of Willow, the Oscar-winning actor has been open about “the real weight of parenting” and how his children have motivated him to improve himself.

In November 2022, all three children supported Smith at the Los Angeles premiere of his film Emancipation. Trey, Jaden, and Willow dressed elegantly for red carpet photos with their father. The following month, on the All The Smoke podcast, Smith described this as his “greatest period of fatherhood.” Smith filmed an episode of Red Table Talk with his children shortly afterward, capturing their arrivals at the house in a TikTok trend to see who is always early and who is always late. Willow was dubbed “the early bird” for arriving 30 minutes early, Trey was “the most dependable son” arriving 15 minutes early, and Jaden was humorously labeled “Mr. Time is a Construct” for his roughly one-hour delay.

Trey Smith, 31

Smith’s eldest, Willard Carroll “Trey” Smith III, was born on November 11, 1992, in Los Angeles. He is Smith’s only child with Zampino. Their co-parenting relationship improved over time after a challenging divorce, which Smith once described on Jada’s Red Table Talk as a significant personal failure. “Divorce was the ultimate failure for me,” he said. “I’ve been hurt a lot in my adult life, but I don’t think anything touches the failure of getting divorced from my 2-year-old son’s mother.” After years of distance, Trey sought out his father, leading to a touching moment shared by Smith on Instagram in 2018, revealing that Trey had called him his “best friend.” Despite their past difficulties, Smith has always felt the joy of fatherhood since Trey’s birth, expressing profound emotion when bringing him home. Smith honored Trey in a 1997 rendition of Bill Withers’ “Just the Two of Us,” which featured the then-5-year-old in its 1998 music video. Trey has since carved out his path as a DJ, releasing his first album, Best Wishes, in 2020.

Jaden Smith, 25

Born on July 8, 1998, in Malibu, California, Jaden Smith got an early start in the entertainment industry alongside his father and older brother in the sitcom All of Us. He made his major film debut with his father in 2006’s The Pursuit of Happyness, earning an MTV Movie & TV Award for best breakthrough performance. Jaden is well-known for his role in The Karate Kid and faced mixed reviews for his part in 2013’s After Earth, a film that Smith regrets due to the negative media attention it brought them both.

Willow Smith, 23

Willow Smith was born on October 31, 2000, in Los Angeles and has followed in the footsteps of her famous parents as a singer, songwriter, and actress. Her early roles included starring with her father in 2007’s I Am Legend and voicing a character in Madagascar 2 with her mother. At just nine years old, Willow released the viral hit “Whip My Hair” and signed with JAY-Z’s label Roc Nation, becoming its youngest artist. However, the sudden fame and accompanying stress proved overwhelming, leading her to famously shave her head in 2012 as a form of rebellion, signaling her discomfort with her life at the time. This act prompted Smith to reconsider his parenting style and respect Willow’s plea to stop touring.
