Michael Rubens Bloomberg, born on February 14, 1942, is an American businessman and politician. He is the majority owner and co-founder of Bloomberg L.P., serving as its CEO from 1981 to 2001 and again from 2014 to 2023. Bloomberg was the mayor of New York City for three terms, from 2002 to 2013, and ran for the 2020 Democratic presidential nomination. In 2024, President Joe Biden awarded him the Presidential Medal of Freedom. Since June 2022, he has chaired the Defense Innovation Board, which advises the U.S. Department of Defense on matters related to artificial intelligence, software, data, and digital modernization. Bloomberg grew up in Medford, Massachusetts, and holds degrees from Johns Hopkins University and Harvard Business School. He started his career at Salomon Brothers before founding Bloomberg L.P. in 1981, a company known for the Bloomberg Terminal and its influence in financial information, software, and media. He led the company as chairman and CEO for two decades. As of April 2024, Forbes lists him as the thirteenth richest person globally, with a net worth of US$106.2 billion. A signatory of The Giving Pledge, Bloomberg has donated $17.4 billion to philanthropic efforts throughout his life. Elected as the 108th mayor of New York City in 2001, he served three consecutive terms, implementing socially liberal and fiscally moderate policies and was known for his technocratic management style.
