Jon Bernthal may be an Emmy Award–winning actor, but he considers fatherhood his most important role.

The His & Hers star shares three children with his wife, Erin Angle, whom he married in 2010. The couple welcomed their first son, Henry, in 2011, followed by son Billy in 2013. Their family grew again in 2015 with the arrival of daughter Adeline.

In 2017, the family faced a frightening health crisis when Adeline was diagnosed with encephalitis and slipped into a coma. She woke up just days later, and Bernthal later told Men’s Health in 2018 that Angle carried their family through the ordeal, pouring “love into our daughter every step of the way.”

Today, Bernthal’s two sons are both heavily involved in competitive sports and have trained in boxing for years — just like their dad. The actor has shared photos of the entire family training together in the ring.

“I want them to approach piano practice and schoolwork with the same intensity,” Bernthal told Men’s Health in 2018. “Whatever they choose to do, I’m good with it — as long as they go all in. The real challenge of being a parent is setting aside your own ego and wanting your kids to be better than you. I don’t want them making the same mistakes I did.”

Here’s everything to know about Jon Bernthal’s three kids: Henry, Billy, and Adeline.

Bernthal and Angle welcomed their oldest son, Henry, in 2011.

When Henry was young, Bernthal enrolled him in jiu-jitsu classes, he told The New York Times in June 2025. A longtime boxer himself, the actor also passed on his love for the sport, and the two bonded in the ring. Bernthal often honors Henry by wearing a glove pendant in his son’s name.

Though close, Bernthal admitted he’s struggling with Henry growing up and gaining independence. “He’s doing something totally natural, but it kills me,” he told the Times.

Still, Bernthal regularly expresses his love for Henry on social media. “My best friend. My battle buddy. My heart,” he wrote alongside a selfie in December 2024. “I love you and miss you, Henry Waylon Jennings Bernthal.”

Billy Bernthal, 13

The actor and Angle welcomed their second son, Billy, in 2013.

Like his older brother, Billy has practiced jiu-jitsu since he was just 2 years old. He’s also a competitive football and basketball player, with Bernthal frequently sharing proud moments from games — including Billy’s role as starting quarterback.

Bernthal once recalled a memorable parenting moment during a 2018 interview with Esquire, when a costumed monster jumped out at him in a haunted house. Billy immediately reacted by punching the scare actor in the groin.

“That kid isn’t scared of anything,” Bernthal said at the time. “He’s going to learn things his own way.”

Despite emphasizing strength and self-defense, Bernthal has been clear about what matters most. “I want them to see kindness as masculine,” he said. “Not as weakness.”

Adeline Bernthal, 11

Bernthal and Angle welcomed their daughter, Adeline, in 2015.

At just 2 years old, Adeline suffered a seizure and fell into a coma after being diagnosed with encephalitis, a condition that causes inflammation of the brain. Bernthal dropped out of filming First Man to stay by her side.

While he admitted he was overwhelmed with fear, Bernthal praised Angle for her unwavering calm. Though Adeline woke up after three days, she initially didn’t recognize her family — but her mother never left her side.

“Talk about bravery in a macho way, but my wife didn’t flinch,” Bernthal told Men’s Health. “What I saw was courage and beauty like I’d never seen before.”

Now healthy, Adeline enjoys making paper cranes and spending time at a horse ranch, according to Bernthal’s 2025 interview with The New York Times. He often shares photos of her hugging him, playing with her brothers, and cuddling the family dog.

“I’ll always be the man who loves you the most,” Bernthal wrote in a September 2023 Instagram tribute. “Love you, baby girl.”
