Ellen Pompeo, the beloved Grey’s Anatomy star, has been married to music producer Chris Ivery since 2007, and together, they are proud parents to three children: Stella Luna, 15, Sienna May, 9, and Eli Christopher, 6. After stepping back from her role on Grey’s Anatomy, Pompeo shared that she’s “super happy” about having more time to spend with her kids. “I have three children, and it’s really important for me to be around and more present for them,” she told Drew Barrymore in December 2022.
Though she is famously private about her family life, Pompeo has occasionally opened up about her experiences as a mother. In a 2016 interview with , she discussed how crucial it is to have strong role models, especially for her daughters. “My daughters are Black, so it’s very important that they see images of beautiful, powerful, strong Black women,” she said. “Whenever I see someone like Kerry Washington on a magazine cover, I make sure that magazine is in our house. It’s super important to me.
Stella Luna, 15
Born on Sept. 15, 2009, Stella Luna is the eldest of Pompeo and Ivery’s children. Interestingly, despite her mom’s long-running role as a TV doctor, Stella has shown a genuine interest in medicine herself from an early age. During a 2015 appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, Pompeo shared how her daughter loves visiting the Grey’s Anatomy set. “She loves hanging out with our medical producer, Linda Klein, and playing with all the medical props,” she said. Stella has even taken her interest further, as Pompeo recalled walking in on her daughter using a real bone drill on a fake femur under supervision!
In July 2022, Stella joined her younger siblings and parents at the Dolce & Gabbana Alta Moda Women’s Show in Italy, where the whole family was dressed in elegant Dolce & Gabbana attire.
Sienna May, 9
Pompeo and Ivery welcomed their second daughter, Sienna May, in 2014 via surrogate. While her arrival was exciting, Stella wasn’t too thrilled with the idea of sharing her parents. “After three months, Stella asked, ‘Is she leaving?’” Pompeo recalled humorously on The Ellen DeGeneres Show. But after a brief adjustment period, the two sisters grew close.
In a 2016 interview, Pompeo spoke about the wisdom she hopes to pass on to her daughters. “We improve with age,” she said. “We should support and empower each other, show compassion, and embrace feeling good about ourselves.
Eli Christopher, 6
Ellen and Chris welcomed their youngest child, Eli Christopher, in 2016. Pompeo revealed his arrival with a sweet photo of Ivery cradling their son, captioned, “Chris Ivery just fell a notch. I’ve got a new guy.” While the family keeps a low profile, Eli has made a few appearances on Pompeo’s Instagram, including an adorable slow dance in 2017 and a singing showcase in 2021.
In 2017, while preparing to direct an episode of Grey’s Anatomy, Pompeo shared a heartfelt moment with her son. She posted a black-and-white photo of herself holding Eli while reading scripts, captioning it, “Directing prep with my mentor and my man,” a nod to both Eli and her co-director, Debbie Allen.
