Craig Melvin may spend his days delivering the news to millions of viewers, but his most important role begins once he heads home—to his two children, Delano and Sybil.

The South Carolina native married fellow broadcaster Lindsay Czarniak in 2011, and the couple soon began building their family. They welcomed their son, Delano, on March 10, 2014, followed by their daughter, Sybil, on Nov. 5, 2016.

Over the years, Melvin has often woven stories about his family into his work, using his gift for storytelling to show just how central they are to his life off-camera. In May 2024, the two-time Emmy Award winner released a children’s book, I’m Proud of You, which he described as a heartfelt “love letter” to his kids.

“I wanted to be able to say to my son 10 years from now, ‘Remember when Dad devoted an entire book to you and your little sister? That’s how much I love you,’” he.

That love was on full display when Melvin stepped into his new role as Hoda Kotb’s replacement on Today, co-hosting the show’s first two hours beginning Jan. 13. To mark his first day, Delano, Sybil, and Czarniak surprised him on set.

“He’s a great dad, and he deserves to be here today,” Delano said proudly.

Sybil followed with her own list of things viewers should know about her dad. “My dad loves to play with me,” she said. “He loves tickle fights and he watches TV shows with me.”

Delano Joseph Melvin, 11

Melvin and Czarniak welcomed their first child, Delano Joseph Melvin, in March 2014. Melvin shared the news shortly after his birth on X (formerly Twitter), revealing that Delano’s nickname would be “Del.” His name is derived from Melvin’s own middle name.

By May 2024, Melvin shared that Delano had developed interests in basketball, football, and dinosaurs—and might even be curious about a future in journalism. Delano has already gotten a taste of the field, interviewing his father on Today and appearing as a correspondent on NBC Nightly News: Kids Edition, where he spoke with NBA star Chris Paul.

He’s also joined his dad for high-profile interviews, including a November 2022 Today segment with Kansas City Chiefs stars Travis Kelce and Patrick Mahomes. A few months later, the family attended the 2023 Super Bowl together—an experience Melvin described as a “lifetime memory.”

While the trip was special for everyone, Melvin said it meant even more to share it with his son. “I’d never got the chance to go to the Super Bowl with my dad,” he told. “So hopefully, this is something that he’ll share with his kids, maybe his grandkids, one day.”

Their bond over sports continues at home as well. In June 2023, Melvin shared that he was coaching Delano’s recreational basketball team. “I thoroughly enjoy the practices, games, and watching him improve,” he said. “I love seeing him develop a genuine joy for basketball, competition, and self-improvement.”

Sybil Ann Melvin, 9

The Melvins welcomed their daughter, Sybil Ann, on Nov. 5, 2016. Melvin later shared that Delano helped inspire her name. While Czarniak was pregnant, the family used “Sibby”—short for “sibling”—as a playful nickname. Over time, the name stuck and became Sybil.

By May 2024, Melvin said Sybil had developed a love for gymnastics, dance, Taylor Swift, and styling her hair. Her passion for dance, in particular, has brought out a more emotional side of her dad.

“I was never one who was prone to a great deal of emotion until fatherhood,” Melvin told Parents, recalling one of Sybil’s lengthy dance recitals. After waiting hours for her brief performance, he found himself overwhelmed by pride. “The confidence she displayed was outstanding, and I found myself getting teary.”

Melvin has described Sybil as “spunky, smart, confident, and always up for adventure,” noting that she’s more expressive than her older brother. While Delano is content quietly watching Planet Earth, Sybil thrives on conversation and interaction.

Although she doesn’t share her father’s enthusiasm for sports, Melvin says they connect in other meaningful ways—from movie dates to long talks. “We spend a fair amount of time just talking,” he said. “Or, it would be more accurate to say, I spend a fair amount of time listening—she’s at a stage now where she loves sharing her thoughts.”
