Bryce Dallas Howard has long prioritized giving her two children — son Theodore and daughter Beatrice — as grounded and normal an upbringing as possible.

The actress married her college sweetheart, actor Seth Gabel, in 2006. One year later, they welcomed their first child, Theodore, followed by daughter Beatrice in 2012, completing their family.

Howard knows firsthand what it’s like to grow up adjacent to fame. Her father, acclaimed director Ron Howard, made a conscious effort to shield her from the spotlight while she was young — a philosophy she’s carried into her own parenting.

“What my parents did that was great was they exposed all of us to movie sets and making movies and the crew,” Howard told in 2015. “We weren’t exposed to the side of the industry that’s perceived as being more glamorous. No premieres — nothing like that. I think that was a good call.” She added that it’s the “same deal” for her own kids today.

While the Deep Cover star admitted in 2018 that her children don’t love when her work requires travel, she cherishes the opportunities they have to explore the world together. “It’s such an awesome thing to get to travel with them and for them to see that my husband and I get to do creative work that we’re excited about and inspired by,” she previously told . “It’s really fun for us and rewarding and challenging.”

Howard also enjoys choosing projects her kids will genuinely love — including 2025’s Pets. “That might even be subconsciously one of the reasons why I lean into projects that I know they’ll be excited about,” she told in 2022. “Because they’re making sacrifices as well.”

Theodore Norman Gabel, 18

Howard and Gabel welcomed their son, Theodore Norman, on Feb. 16, 2007 — just one year after their wedding. Howard was pregnant with Theo while filming Spider-Man 3.

Growing up, Theo frequently traveled alongside his parents for work. Howard shared in 2015 that when she filmed in one location for extended periods, she enrolled her kids in local schools so they could make friends. “They love to travel,” she said.

Though Howard has said her kids wouldn’t describe her as “strict,” she admitted in February 2024 that she’s especially serious about safety — something that became clear while teaching Theo how to drive.

“The poor boy, what I put him through,” she joked. “He basically can be a race car driver at this point because I’m like, ‘You’re not allowed to get your license until you know how to do every defensive driving move imaginable.’”

While Howard and Gabel largely keep Theo out of the public eye, she has occasionally shared nostalgic moments online. For his 17th birthday, she posted a throwback photo of him as a baby in an Elmo birthday hat, writing that she was “in such awe of the deeply kind, ever-stylish, creative, smart, and wonderful man you’re becoming.”

Now 18, Theo appears to be following in his family’s creative footsteps. “Theo is definitely on the filmmaker track in a big way,” Howard shared on the What in the Winkler podcast in March 2025. Her father Ron added, “In summer camp, everybody wanted him to act in their film as well.”

Beatrice Jean Gabel, 14

Howard and Gabel welcomed their daughter, Beatrice Jean, on Jan. 19, 2012. After experiencing postpartum depression following her first pregnancy, Howard was determined to feel fully supported the second time around.

“I didn’t get [postpartum depression] the second time,” she told in 2015. “It was so emotional for me because I didn’t feel comfortable asking for that kind of help the first time. I am blessed that they did completely support me in all the ways.”

In that same interview, Howard shared a glimpse into Beatrice’s thoughtful and imaginative personality. Recalling a bedtime moment when her daughter was 3, she said Beatrice once told her parents she was glad they “saw me at the store and brought me home,” prompting laughter — and a gentle reminder that Beatrice had chosen them.

As Beatrice has grown older, she’s become an enthusiastic fan of her mom’s work. Howard recalled her daughter’s excitement while she was filming Argylle alongside John Cena and Dua Lipa. “She knew everyone I was working with,” Howard told in 2022. “I was like, ‘Who are you?’”

Beatrice has also formed close friendships with the children of Howard’s costars, including Chris Pratt’s son Jack. “Jack’s in love,” Pratt joked on The Ellen DeGeneres Show in 2017. Howard agreed, adding, “They really have an incredible friendship.”

For Beatrice’s 10th birthday, Howard described her daughter as “a person with incredible kindness, sparkling wit and genuine love for others and the world around her.” In later posts, she praised Beatrice’s humor and surprisingly wise advice.

Though Howard shares many traits with her children, one thing didn’t carry over: her signature red hair. “My redhead lineage is very strong,” she joked to Conan O’Brien in 2021. “Then my kids are blond! They’re all so blond — I just feel like I failed.”
