Bill Murray has spent decades in the spotlight, but when it comes to his family, he’s chosen to keep much of his personal life out of view.

The Ghostbusters star first became a father in 1982 with the birth of his son Homer, whom he shares with his first wife, Margaret Kelly. Three years later, the former couple welcomed another son, Luke Murray. Following their 1996 divorce, Murray expanded his family with four more sons—Caleb, Jackson, Cooper and Lincoln—with his second wife, Jennifer Butler, whom he was married to from 1997 to 2008.

Though he tends to keep his children’s lives private, Murray has occasionally shown his support publicly—especially when it comes to Luke’s career. He’s often been seen cheering him on during his time coaching with the University of Connecticut men’s basketball team.

While most of Murray’s children stay out of the spotlight, Luke has shared glimpses of his own family life, frequently bringing his kids along to games. In March 2026, when he was introduced as head coach of Boston College men’s basketball team, his family joined him for the milestone moment. Luke and his wife, Kara, are parents to four children: sons Luke Jr. and Cash, and daughters Celine and Leila.

Here’s everything to know about Bill Murray’s grandchildren.

Murray is a grandfather to at least four grandchildren through Luke. In September 2015, Luke married Kara in Philadelphia, and his father notably skipped attending the Emmy Awards to be there for the wedding.

He officially became a grandfather when Luke and Kara welcomed their first son, Luke Jr. The couple later expanded their family with another son, Cash, followed by daughters Celine and Leila.

Throughout the years, Luke’s family has supported him as he built a successful coaching career, with roles at several college programs before eventually returning to Connecticut, where he was raised and attended college.

A grandfather in the stands

Murray has long been a familiar face at his son’s games, sometimes joined by his grandchildren in the crowd.

When UConn claimed the NCAA Men’s Basketball Championship title in 2023, Murray watched proudly from the stands before joining the on-court celebration. In a memorable moment, Luke climbed the ladder to cut down the net while his sons stood below.

Most recently, Murray attended the 2026 March Madness Elite Eight game, where UConn pulled off a major win against Duke.

A new chapter for the family

In March 2026, Luke stepped into his new role as head coach at Boston College, sharing that his family was excited about the move.

At his introductory press conference, his wife and all four children were present in support. Luke later added that his father was equally enthusiastic about the transition and looks forward to spending more time in Boston.

Bill Murray on fatherhood

Although he encourages his children to live life on their own terms, Murray has occasionally reflected on his parenting journey. In an interview with Rolling Stone, he spoke candidly about the life-changing moment of becoming a father.

“People talk about the joy, but there’s also fear,” he shared. “The life you knew is over, and something entirely new begins.”

Years later, in a conversation with Esquire, he explained that his goal has always been simple: to help his children be their best selves while fostering a thoughtful and supportive home.
