Best Breast Pumps UK
Breastfeeding is a fantastic way for you to feed, and bond with your baby. The benefits of breastfeeding are well known, but it’s not possible for some women to breastfeed, or to breastfeed exclusively. Pumping breast milk to bottle feed your baby is a wonderful alternative, and it can let other members of your family get some bonding time with your baby too. However, there’s such a wide world of breast pumps available, it can be overwhelming when it comes to choosing one. Here’s our top ten breast pumps for you and your baby.
- USB rechargeable
- LED Screen
- 5 massage settings and 9 expressing settings
- Very quiet
|Cup material||Silicone with additional cushioning|
|Included extras||Closer To Nature bottle, but no lid or teat.|
The Tommee Tippee Electric Breast Pump has 5 massage modes, which stimulate your milk flow in the same way as your baby would when it begins to latch on. You can control these massage settings using the + and – buttons. After around a minute, the pump will move on to an expressing mode, which has 9 settings. You can use the same + and – buttons to find the setting that works for you.
The pump also has an LED screen showing your expressing times, a Closer To Nature bottle, marked with measurements so you can see how much milk you’re expressing, and a silicone cup with cushioning for comfort.
- Soft, flexible cup at 105 degree angle
- Mains or battery power
- 2 phase expressing rhythm to mimic baby feeding
|Weight||200g without batteries|
|Cup Material||Soft, flexible rubber|
|Included extras||Calma bottle, lid, and different sized breast shields|
The Medela Swing Flex can be powered through a mains adapter, or it can be battery operated for when you’re out and about. Batteries aren’t included so you will need 4 AA batteries.
The operation control has four illuminated buttons, which does make late night pumping easier. It follows a similar massage pattern to the one a baby would use, so it massages to start milk flow, before taking a slower rhythm to pump.
The cup is made from a soft rubber material, and sits at a 105 degree angle. The angle is to increase comfort, and reduce any leakage. The cup is oval shaped, and can be rotated so you can find the best and most comfortable position for you.
- One piece pump
- Easy clean
- Silicone flexible cup
- One size fits all design
|Cup material||Food grade silicone|
|Extras included||No. Compatible with the Haakaa Flower Stopper, but this isn’t included.|
It has a soft silicone cup that also acts as a spout for easy transfer from the pump to a bottle. It’s made from a food grade silicone, and it’s dishwasher safe. It’s a one piece unit, and it should be sterilised before use. It can withstand temperatures of 300 degrees Celsius.
It’s easy to use, but as it works on the same principle as a nasal aspirator, and not like a pump with a lever, it can take some getting used to. You squeeze it before putting the cup on the breast, and it can then either catch any letdown on its own, or you can continue to squeeze it to express.
- 2 stage technology
- Almost silent operation
- Manual pump designed to reduce hand fatigue
|Extras included||Small Lansinoh bottle, sealing disk, NaturalWave slow flow teat, and cap.|
Best Manual Pump
The Lansinoh Manual breast pump has an ergonomically designed handle, and uses a 2 phase pump technology. The handle has a switch to change between the stimulation phase, and the expressing phase. The design of the handle is ideal for reducing hand fatigue.
The cup is made from silicone, and is designed to fit, and sit comfortably on your breast. There’s also a bottle stand, so you can set the pump aside, and it won’t tip over. You can use the pump to pump directly into a Lansinoh milk storage bag, but it can be tricky to master pumping into a bag, and not a sturdier bottle.
- Digital display
- Mains powered
- Multiple setting options
- Comfortable cup
|Extras included||270ml Nuby Natural Touch bottle, Natural Touch Slow Flow teat, bottle lid, and a Nuby dummy suitable from birth.|
This breast pump is powered through the mains power, so you just plug it in and it pumps for you. You can use this pump on the go, but you will need to purchase a Nuby battery pack separately.
It has 2 stage technology. The first stage, the stimulation stage has 3 settings and 5 speeds. The second stage has 5 settings and 5 speeds. It makes it completely adjustable to your preferences.
The control has four buttons and a digital display. The display shows the settings you have chosen, and can display the length of the expression session. The only downside to this breast pump is that it can be a little loud at just under 60 dB.
- Double breast pump
|Extras included||2 bottles, 2 teats, 2 storage bag adapters and 10 storage bags.|
This breast pump has an LED touchscreen display which displays the time spent expressing, and is used to change the settings. It has 4 modes, and 9 levels of suction, so it can be adjusted throughout your session to suit your milk flow.
The cups are made from a soft silicone. They use a petal type design, which encourages suction to the breast, and sits in a way that doesn’t cause any pain.
It’s powered by a rechargeable battery and a full charge can last for a few days. It’s lightweight, and can be used for travelling. This breast pump is also very quiet, and the noise measures at just under 45dB.
- Hospital grade
- Multiple settings
|Cup material||BPA free plastic|
|Extras included||2 bottles, 2 slow flow teats, 2 bottle stands|
It’s rechargeable, or it can be used while connected to the mains. It lasts for around 3 hours after a full charge. It has different settings, speeds and a letdown cycle. It also has a timer so you can see how long you’ve been expressing for, and an auto-shutoff feature. The Spectra S1 Plus has a nightlight as well, making it easy to express in the dark or dim lighting.
It’s quieter than you would expect for a hospital grade pump, and is extremely comfortable to use. It’s a very durable electric breast pump, and it is portable, though it is heavier than other pumps.
It comes with one size of breast shield, though other sizes can be ordered. The cups aren’t cushioned, but they are comfortable. They are compatible with other cushions if you need a bit more support.
- Wearable, and handsfree
- Ultra quiet
- Compatible app for control, and history
- Comfortable, and easy to use
|Cup material||Food grade BPA free plastic|
|Extras included||2 bottles, 2 sizes of breast shield, 2 sealing caps, 2 bra extenders, 2 storage caps and a spout for pouring milk.|
The Elvie is an extremely innovative pump. You can set up the app, which allows you to check the current session, but also lets you see the pumping history for each breast. The app will also track the milk volume, and allows you to control the speed settings.
It’s a very intuitive pump. It has a stimulation phase, but it automatically detects when the flow changes, and then it changes itself to the expression stage. It stops when it detects the bottle is full.
As it’s designed to be wearable, it’s really comfortable, and almost silent. It’s made from a BPA free, food grade plastic. It has two different sizes of breast shields, but you can purchase a smaller size shield separately.
- Food grade silicone
- Comfortable cup suction
- Lotus flower design
|Extras included||Dust lid, stopper, and a carry bag.|
It’s made from food grade silicone, and is BPA and phthalate free. It has a unique lotus flower design on the outside, and it comes with a stopper. The stopper means that you can express milk wherever you are, and keep it contained until you can transfer it to a bottle.
The cup is soft, comfortable, and doubles as a spout. You squeeze the bottle and place it on the breast. This applies the suction, and then you can gently squeeze the bottle to pump, or allow it to collect letdown without squeezing.
- Mains powered
- Angled design so you can sit upright
- Ultra comfortable cup design
- Stimulation phase, and choice of three pump settings
|Extras included||Philips Natural 4oz bottle, Natural teat, sealing disk, 4 disposable breast pads, and a sample pack of 2 breast pads.|
The Ultra Comfort Electric features their petal design cushioning in the cup. This improves comfort, suction, and creates a more realistic massage sensation. The pump starts off in stimulation mode to encourage milk flow, and then you can choose one of three expression settings.
This is a mains powered pump, which makes it quite powerful and fast. It’s designed to be as quiet as possible, so you can express milk while your baby is sleeping. The angles used in the design is also perfect for allowing you to sit back and relax as you express.
