Alex Honnold’s Two Kids: Everything to Know About Daughters June and Alice

Whether he’s free soloing El Capitan in Yosemite National Park or scaling Taiwan’s towering Taipei 101, Alex Honnold has built a career around pushing the limits.

But over the past nearly five years, the world-famous climber has taken on a very different challenge: becoming a dad.

Honnold married his wife, Sanni McCandless Honnold, in 2020, and the couple has since welcomed two daughters—June in 2022 and Alice in 2024. While Alex continues to pursue high-risk climbs, including those featured in Netflix’s January 2026 special Skyscraper Live, he’s shared that fatherhood has reshaped him, both personally and professionally, influencing how he prepares for each new adventure.

Here’s everything to know about Alex Honnold’s two children: daughters June and Alice.

June was born in February 2022 via emergency C-section

Alex and Sanni welcomed their first daughter, June, on Feb. 17, 2022, following a birth Sanni later described as “fairly traumatic.”

In February 2024, the couple reflected on June’s arrival in an interview with, sharing that she was delivered via emergency C-section. According to Fatherly, June wasn’t breathing at birth and was immediately taken to the NICU, where she spent her first week.

“When I got to the hospital, there were some complications, and my doctor recommended a C-section. “We went straight into surgery, and everything went smoothly after that.”

Looking back, Alex admitted to Fatherly that the experience took him by surprise. “I was definitely surprised by how intense it all was,” he said, adding, “To think that every one of us was born—that everyone has gone through this—it’s pretty wild.”

Alice arrived in February 2024, close in age to June

When planning their family, Alex and Sanni knew they wanted their children to be close in age.

“We decided we wanted our kids close together and had been trying for a few months,” Sanni shared with.

While attending her best friend’s wedding, Sanni discovered she was pregnant again. “We were very happy when we got the good news,” she said.

Just weeks before June turned 2, Alice was born on Feb. 6, 2024. This time, the experience was far less stressful.

“Alice’s birth was a huge relief,” Sanni said. “We were home two days later!”

Alice was named after Alex’s grandmother

Alice’s name honors Alex’s grandmother, though Sanni initially hesitated, feeling it sounded a bit too close to Alex’s own name.

“I finally gave in—I love the name Alice,” she wrote on Instagram in February 2025. “But one month in, it was already confusing, so I started calling her by her middle name, Summer.”

Sanni added that while she enjoys when others call her daughter Alice, to her, she’ll always be Summer.

“I’m looking forward to when she’s 5 and decides she wants to go by Moon, or Cat, or Huckleberry Finn,” she joked.

They join their parents on outdoor adventures

Given Alex and Sanni’s love of the outdoors, it was only a matter of time before June and Alice joined them on the trail.

In June 2025, the family embarked on their first backpacking trip together. Sharing photos from the outing on Instagram, Sanni joked about bringing just one child carrier.

“We made the bold choice to only have one kid carrier, but it worked out—both kids walked quite a bit!” she wrote. “June did spend some time on Alex’s shoulders, and sugar was heavily used as motivation.”

Since then, the family has continued their outdoor adventures, including camping trips in Yosemite National Park.

Fatherhood has shifted Alex’s perspective

Though Alex continues to take on daring climbs—like scaling Taipei 101 during Skyscraper Live—he’s acknowledged that becoming a father has changed him in meaningful ways.

In a May 2022 interview with Fatherly, Alex shared that while he still felt like himself, the weight of responsibility was slowly sinking in.

“I don’t know if the full weight has hit yet—it just keeps adding,” he said. “Being a father becomes more real as your kid grows. It’s been good. It gets better as it goes.”

Later, during an appearance on The Rich Roll Podcast in October 2024, Alex explained how parenthood has also influenced his approach to climbing.

“The short answer is that I didn’t want to die before, and I still don’t want to die,” he said. “So in that sense, not much has changed—you still make smart decisions and avoid accidents.”

But, he added, “It’s definitely changed how I spend my time. I’m home more. I’m parenting more. And because of that, I choose different goals now. I set different athletic goals.”
