Katie Couric’s 2 Daughters: Get to Know Ellie and Carrie

by Kristine Bowman

Katie Couric is a proud mom of two daughters who’ve found their own paths in the world of media—just behind the scenes. While Elinor (Ellie) and Caroline (Carrie) Monahan didn’t follow their mom into broadcasting, both have carved out creative careers in television and production. Ellie is a screenwriter with credits on hit shows, and Carrie works as a producer.

Couric shares her daughters with her late husband, Jay Monahan, who passed away from colon cancer in 1998 at age 42. Ellie was born in 1991, and Carrie followed five years later in 1996. In 2014, Couric married John Molner, whom she credits as a supportive partner through life’s ups and downs.

When asked what she’s most proud of, Couric once said without hesitation: her children. “Probably the fact that I think I did a pretty good job of raising my kids,” she shared in 2012. “My daughters are, first and foremost, incredibly nice girls with good values.”

She’s also been open about the unique challenges of raising kids in the spotlight, often reminding them, “If you do something you’re not supposed to do, it’s different for you than it is for the average kid. You’re going to be on the cover of the National Enquirer.

Elinor “Ellie” Monahan, 34

Born on July 23, 1991, in Washington, D.C., Ellie is Couric’s eldest daughter. A Yale graduate, she now lives in Los Angeles and works as a screenwriter. Her credits include Mr. Robot and The Boys.

In 2012, Ellie penned a touching Father’s Day essay for HuffPost, reflecting on the loss of her dad. “Though we suffered that devastating loss at a young age… we have also been very fortunate to have been brought up by a strong, supportive and loving mother,” she wrote.

Couric has described Ellie as a private and thoughtful person. “When she was 16, I told a story about her in an interview, and she said, ‘Mom, could you ask me first?’ I was like, ‘You’re absolutely right,’” Couric recalled.

Ellie met her husband, Mark Dobrosky, while they were both at Yale. He proposed in February 2019 using the ring her father had once given to Couric. They married on July 4, 2021, at Cedar Lakes Estate in New York.

Caroline “Carrie” Monahan, 29

Caroline, or Carrie, was born on January 5, 1996, in New York City. She graduated from Stanford University with honors in American studies and French, then earned her master’s in journalism from Columbia.

Carrie has worked as a fact-checking producer at Reuters and, as of 2023, is an associate producer at RadicalMedia. She’s also very close to her sister Ellie—serving as her maid of honor and even performing two songs at her wedding. “She sang Fleetwood Mac’s ‘Songbird’ and Kacey Musgraves’ ‘Late to the Party.’ It was so moving and beautiful!” Ellie told.

Carrie also shares a close bond with her mom. Couric recalled on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert how, during a tough time anchoring the CBS Evening News, she broke down at dinner one night. Then 10-year-old Carrie tried to comfort her with a line from Sex and the City: “Mom, remember what Samantha says… ‘If I listened to what every b—- in New York said about me, I’d never leave the house!’” Couric laughed, remembering.

Who Is Katie Couric’s Husband? Meet John Molner

Katie Couric found love again with financier John Molner, whom she met through a mutual friend in 2012. They were engaged a year later and tied the knot in 2014 during a backyard ceremony.

Over the years, they’ve supported each other through major health battles. Couric revealed in 2022 that she had been diagnosed with breast cancer, undergoing surgery and radiation. Just months before their wedding, Molner had a tumor removed from his liver.

“Cancer has had a huge impact on me,” Couric said, referencing the loss of both her husband Jay and her sister Emily. “The most powerless feeling is not being able to help someone you love conquer this disease.
