Continued Professional Development and Training at Kids Company

Kids Company delivers practical, emotional and educational support to vulnerable inner-city children. The charity provides a safe, caring, family environment where services are tailored to the needs of each individual to empower children who have experienced enormous challenges to lead positive and fulfilling lives. In addition, Kids Company is a centre for training, education and research to improve the quality of care provided for vulnerable children and young people and offers innovative professional development and training opportunities, validated by London Metropolitan University. The courses are designed to increase access to, and to enhance the quality of, child centred provision. They form part of the strategic planning for the vision of replication of Kids Company’s approach.
These courses are for students to discover the value of therapeutic communication skills in practice as well as creative and relational approaches to well-being. These include the application of multi-disciplinary, therapeutic approaches to practice in the arts, sports, communication technology, fashion, leisure and complementary health towards the fulfilment of children and young people’s potential.

Year One: Professional Development Certificate: Therapeutic Communication Skills for Working with Children 45 Credits Certificate Level
The teaching is delivered on one weekend a month over a year from January to December.  There are nine weekends in total.  Students are required to attend regular reflective practice sessions and complete a professional placement including on-going contact with children and young people.
Through the Professional Development Certificate students can access Kids Company’s unique holistic ‘wrap-around’ approach in the context of dynamic child-centred professional placements and taught modules.  This course educates students in principles of professional practice and applied therapeutic thinking. Emotional Literacy is promoted through creative and relational approaches to the well-being of children and young people.  The course provides knowledge and experience of professional frameworks, safeguarding and anti-discriminatory practice. This foundation course applies key concepts and therapeutic skills into practice to enhance the capacity of anyone to relate more effectively with children and young people.

Weekend Dates for 2015 include: January 10th & 11th, February 7th & 8th, March 7th & 8th, May 9th & 10th, June 13th & 14th, July 11th & 12th, September 19th & 20th, October 17th & 18th, November 28th & 29th.

Year Two: Intermediate Diploma in Professional Development in Well-being Practice for Children and Young People  45 Credits Foundation Degree Level
The teaching is delivered on two Friday’s a month over one year from January to December.  Students are required to attend regular reflective practice sessions and complete a professional placement including on-going and consistent contact with children and young people.
On the Intermediate Diploma students can access Kids Company’s inter-disciplinary approach sharing influence from youth work, mental health, social work, education and therapy.  Placements promoting the health and well-being of children and young people are designed to include a choice of specialist options in key-working, mentoring and creative group work.  This intermediate course supports students to develop the core competencies for the Common Assessment Framework (CAF).

Dates for 2015 include: January 16th & 30th, February 13th & 27th, March 13th & 27th, May 15th & 29th, June 12th & 26th, July 12th & 24th, September 25th, October 9th & 23rd, November 6th & 20th, December 4th.

Year Three: Diploma in Professional Development in Well-being Practice for Children and Young People 45 Credits Honours Level
The teaching is delivered on two Friday’s a month over one year from January to December.  Students are required to attend regular reflective practice sessions and complete a creative and professional placement including a project to promote individual and community well-being.
On the Diploma course students can access Kids Company’s multi-disciplinary approach to qualify as a trans-disciplinary practitioner.  Students who graduate successfully will be able to apply their professional knowledge and expertise to meet the unique needs of each individual child, young person or context.  This course consolidates the students learning in Kids Company’s creative and relational approach with specific reference to children, families, organisations and communities. Students will also complete a case study on their creative and relational approach to well-being with a child, young person, family, group or organisation over time.
This Diploma qualification provides advanced training in a wide range of relevant knowledge and professional experience including transferable skills which can be applied in any context and role that addresses the needs of children and young people.  Students who qualify will be competent in becoming the lead professional within the Common Assessment Framework (CAF) and have standards of proficiency in safeguarding, child protection, emotional literacy, inter-disciplinary practice, ethics and conduct as well as creative and relational therapeutic communication skills.

Dates for 2015 include: January 9th & 23rd, February 6th & 20th, March 6th & 20th, May 8th & 22nd, June 5th & 19th, July 3rd & 17th, September 18th, October 2nd & 16th, November 13th & 27th, December 11th.

Next Interview Date
Interviews will take place at Kids Company Head Office, Southwark, on the following dates:

Saturday 20th September 2014.

Please book early as places are limited and the courses very popular. Places will be awarded on a first come basis and there may be a waiting list later in the year.

The interview includes an experiential workshop, a course presentation and small group or individual interview. This is free of charge.

Course Fees
Following the interview process, you will be informed if you have been given a place and a non-returnable deposit of £350 is required to secure your place on the course.

The overall fee for Year One is £2,150 (including the deposit) and can be paid in advance (£1,800), by standing order on a termly (£600) or on a monthly basis (£200).

The overall fee for Year Two is £2,450 and Year Three is £2,450, which can be paid via flexible payment methods.
