Kids Company currently works with complementary therapists as part of a multi-disciplinary team, delivering therapeutic bodywork to our young people and parents. We use a range of therapies which have been developed with particular sensitivity and awareness to healing trauma.
The young people at Kids Company have experienced a great deal of trauma in their lives; many are prone to depression and anxiety. It is well documented that the effects of trauma on regulation of the body and emotional states, often leads to chronic hyper arousal. This can manifest in sleep disturbance, eating disorders, and other forms of body distress.
Kids Company uses an attachment model, and from the perspective of bodywork, we believe that many stages of attachment invariably need the experience of safe touch. It is through this experience that we not only form a sense of our own identity, but we also learn to emotionally regulate. All of this within the medium of a trusting relationship with a body therapist, can build important neurological pathways in the brain; a necessary component in giving us a blueprint on which to form healthy relationships.
Parents and teachers can be key figures in nurturing the children. Kids Company recognises this and supports these relationships. When working with one parent or one teacher, complementary practitioners will be supporting many children.
SOME OF THE THERAPIES PROVIDED
Massage releases both muscular and emotional tension and helps to induce deep relaxation. Gentle massage affects the nervous system through nerve endings in the skin, encouraging the activity of seratonin – our ‘happy’ hormone and neurotransmitter – and reducing levels of stress chemicals in the body. Deeper massage improves the supply of oxygen and nutrients to body tissue and helps the lymphatic system to flush away waste products. Massage is relaxing and also therapeutic for knotted muscles and stiff joints, contributing to our young people’s emotional and physical wellbeing.
Emotional Focused Therapy is a universal healing technique. It is a psychological acupressure technique based on the same energy meridians used in traditional acupuncture to treat physical and emotional ailments for over five thousand years, but without the invasiveness of needles. Emotions cause physical manifestations which can lead to the development of illness. Meridian lines are invisible lines that carry energy throughout the body. If the meridians are not flowing well, there will be physical and emotional blockages. Stimulation is used, for example with tapping, eye movements and counting. This can balance things and help to dissipate the intensities of stresses felt, as well as control pain levels.
The combination of tapping the energy meridians and voicing positive affirmation works to clear the “short-circuit” – the emotional block — from the body’s bioenergy system, restoring the mind and body’s balance, which is essential for optimal health and the healing of physical disease.
Reflexology is a holistic treatment focusing on the hands and feet. It involves applying gentle pressure to reflex points on the hands and feet to help bring about a feeling of deep relaxation, and reduce stress. Reflexology encourages the body to reach a natural equilibrium and for all the systems in the body to work at their optimum as well as helping with relaxation.
