Bare Thread
The Bare Thread clothing label was started at Kids Company’s Urban Academy in 2005 by young people who found that fashion could give them a powerful voice in a world where they were often left isolated and unheard. Their inspiring creativity and social vision has been nurtured by teachers and supported by industry professionals.
It is here that our young people are taught the industry skills required to work in fashion – from design to garment production to marketing. Our fashion label aims to create opportunities for young people to explore and showcase their talent.
Through the Bare Thread platform, the young people created original one-off statement garments, using fashion to tell their stories. Now each year, the young people develop an ethically produced range of limited edition T-shirts and accessories, featuring their designs.
The Kids Company fashion collective has earned recognition from some of the most exclusive retailers and art institutions, including Mulberry, Selfridges, the Tate Modern and the Royal Academy of Arts.
Bare Thread is available to buy online here: www.kidsco.org.uk/shop . All proceeds from sales of the label are invested back into the education of vulnerable children and young people accessing the support of Kids Company. “This label is about compassion and transformation and is a way for us to give back what we never had” (Anita, Urban Academy student).
